Car trouble

A little while ago I posted a picture of a haul, but didn't mention much about a little stool that I got with it.

It was covered in some kind of gross plastic-y fake leather.

I thought the legs and feet looked pretty old, so I was hoping that once I took off the "pleather" I would find a really nice antique stool. Instead I got this...

BLEH!

So on a trip to Vallue Village I spotted a nice pillow case sham for $2.99 and I knew it would be the perfect cover for the stool. After grabbing my scissors, staple gun, glue gun, and paint, I went to work. A few hours later, and it's a brand new stool!

The sham had the funky material in the front, a silky cream coloured material at the back and a nice rope finish all around. I used the cream material underneath and glue gunned the rope all around that to finish it off and hide the seams. I painted the legs, and then finished them off with a nice shiny acrylic enamel spray.

I think I did a pretty darn good job! Unfortunately, I can't kick back and enjoy the fruits of my labour as my husband promptly stole it to use under his desk at work. It's probably for the best anyways as my cats would have thought I had made them a new scratching post :p

On to the finds for this week so far!

This cabinet was sitting at the curb with a whole pile of construction junk and bags of broken drywalling. There was also a mirrored bathroom cabinet, but it wasn't in the best shape. This cabinet however looks great. I will probably put it up in our own bathroom. We need all the storage we can get. :)

Just got to change out the handles, vacuum out some sawdust and spider webs, and it's good to go!

Next up, another Christmas tree! This one has a sticker on the box with the date it was purchased: 10/12 October 2012. It seems practically unused. According to the date it's only been used a maximum of 2 seasons...why throw it away?

Another day I stopped at a huge pile in front of a house and saw the homeowner sitting on his porch. I waved and asked him if he minded if I took a look. He was very friendly and happy to go through all his bags and boxes with me to show me all the stuff he was getting rid of and telling me what was in each bag and box. He had a bunch of stuff that was still good and usefull such as Christmas decorations, lightbulbs still in the packages, cute painted flower pots, mugs, glasses, mason jars, vases, bedding, clothing, etc... It wasn't anything I was interested in, but I realized my car was getting pretty full, so I ended up driving it right over to the donation boxes right down the road.

I did take some stuff home that I wasn't sure what to do with yet at the time...There was some kind of over the door extendable towel holder, 2 cast iron hangers for hanging flowers, a glass from Red Lobster, and a large candy cane decoration (only 1 burnt out bulb).

There was also a box in his garbage can that he told me only had junk and old costumes in it and nothing good, so I told him that I liked all kinds of junk and costumes, and looked in it anyways. Inside was a bag full of 6 male action figure dolls and some kind of hovercraft boat. The costumes were mainly old clothes from the 70's, a plastic sword, and a plastic gun that makes shooting noises when you fire it. The green dress below is my favourite. It just screams 70's summer dress. I might try to sell it on Etsy or something. The funky lamp was also in the bin under the box, as well as another glass light globe that has a funky pattern blown into it.

Funk does not belong in the dump!

This is the action figure guy, does anyone recognize him? I couldn't find a name on him anywhere.

These are 2 other dresses that were in the box that I thought were nice...

I couldn't read the brand name on this label anymore, but the rest was in Italian and said it was made in Italy.

Once my car was empty again, I cruised around but didn't find much more. I came across another move-out pile (the mattress and/or boxspring is always a dead give away), but there wasn't much. I grabbed one box that contained matching moon and sun candle sticks, a ziplock bag full of pens, a note peper holder, a box of security envelopes, some index cards, a roll of raffle tickets, a roll of white ribbon, 2 bags of ballons, a box of thumbtacks, a small dog magnet and a turkey tray.

And then it happened...The next night was large garbage day in a neighbouring town. I was so excited because there is always tonnes of good stuff, and I had missed it last month because of a family function. I was in the middle of collecting stuff when I went back to the car....and it wouldn't start! I was on some small dark dead end street, and every time I called home, it was busy, which meant my husband was on the computer. I desperately tried to call his cell phone, and I instantly heard it ringing behind me in his jacket as I was using his car this night. Ahhh! I called our local garage guy out of desperation and no answer there as well.

A car pulled up to the pile I had just checked and 2 scrap metal guys got out and started to load up their trailer. I asked them if they knew anything about cars, but they kind of just shrugged their shoulders. One guy took a look and tried to start it and said "Boy, that doesn't sound good!" He looked under the hood at a few things and said it looked like it was out of coolant, but other than that, he didn't really know.

So that was it, I was stranded. The scrap guys wished me luck and took off and I just sat there panicking and re-dialing home every few minutes. Finally after about 20 minutes of sitting there with the hood up, I tried to start it one more time. It was weak sounding, but I slowly gave it some gas and it was moving! I didn't dare stop it again, I got out, slammed the hood down and carefully drove back home. At least if it broke down again, I would be that much closer to home and hopefully on a main road where I could get some more help.

I managed to make it all the way home after pulling over halfway to call my husband. By that time he was wondering where the hell I was and was starting to panic himself. I practically kissed the ground when I got into the driveway. I was so freaked out, I don't want to have to experience that again!

The car went into the shop the next morning while I sorted through the stuff I did manage to find. There were still so many streets I hadn't covered yet. I get upset thinking about how much stuff I missed!

My first stop had a stainless steel garbage can full of things. The can itself was broken, but it was easier to grab it all and put it in the van instead of picking through it. Inside I had spotted a wrought iron kettle, and some kind of mystery item. I don't know what it is, but it looks interesting. I'll have to put it up on Reddit's "What is this thing" board to see if I can find out.

Inside was a small tin piggy bank, a neatly shapped gl;ass jar, an old metal funnel, and a complete clothes line. It took some time to unjumble that mess, but everything is there. We already have a clothesline outside, so this one will go to the second hand store.

Next up was what looked to be a condo move out. There was a wicker laundry basket full of bedding, and at the bottom was a ton of miscellaneous stuff, so I just grabbed it all to sort at home.

Inside was a winter jacket in excellent condition ...

Three telephones, 2 of which were cordless, a twin flowered sheet set, 2 small childrens sized shirts, glasses lens cleaner, a bunch of small sample sized cosmetics and creams, a picture frame with "family" on it in french, a pet brush with the tags still on it, a phone charger for the car, a few different combs, hair elastics, 3 pens, one of which has a record and play button on it for notes, sticky tape, a packet of kleenex, a radio plate, a small plastic bin full of jewellery (all costume), a knapsack, a diabetic blood testing machine and a nice heavy comforter. This ain't no cheapie bed in a bag Wal-mart comforter, it's really nice and heavy. I bet it's really nice and cozy on cold winter nights. I am going to keep the smaller cordless as I called my husband at work with it the next day and he said it was clearer than our regular phone.

The last stop where I broke down had a huge pile, there was so much stuff I couldn't believe it, most of it was old appliances, a 40" flat screen TV, patio umbrellas, and a desk top computer tower. I managed to take away a hug box of clothing before discovering that my car wouldn't start. I wasn't pulled over that much, and I saw the scrap metal guys coming in their trailer. I wanted to move over to make sure we all had enough room, but in the end there was plenty of room for both of us anyways. Thankfully no other cars needed to pass us though.

Out of this pile I got 14 shirts, 8 pants, 2 scarves, 2 pairs of boots - one leather and one suede, 1 jacket and 4 tie-on chair cushions. The brand names included: Levi Strauss, Chaps Ralph Lauren, Kenneth Cole, Giorgio Brutini, Tamarak, Penmans, Nevada, 725, and Board Dökter.

All in all a good haul, but there was so much more of the town I wasn't able to get to because of the car breaking down. However, it's not an experience that I'd want to repeat, so I'll take it!

Marvin

The other day I came across a move out haul in the country.

I was loading stuff into my car when this white cat came up and jumped on the pile meowing at me. He came down and started weaving around my legs, head butting them and continuing to meow.

There was a farmer off by a barn in the little lot next door tinkering on his tractor, so I asked him what was going on with all the stuff at the house. He replied that he didn't know, that the people just left, they took off.

I don't know if he was renting the barn, or if he was the landlord that cleaned all the stuff out of the house, but I started piling everything into my car. The cat kept meowing at me and jumped into my car and sat on the pile of stuff I had loaded in there.

I started to suspect that he may have belonged to the former tenants. I checked him out and he was neutered, he was a pet, not some barn cat used to chase the mice away. He was skinny and missing some teeth, so I also figured that he was at least 10 years old, if not older. One of the bags I looked into also had kitty litter and poop in it... This pretty much confirmed to me that they had left him behind.

I wasn't sure what to do. I knew my husband would kill me if I brought home another cat...I started to close the back hatch of my van (it's automatic and beeps) and as it slowly went down I thought "Ok kitty, if you stay in the van, you're coming home with me, and if not...well, I don't know..." It was almost down all the way when he hopped out. Damn.

It wasn't far to get home, but man I was really troubled on the drive home about him being left behind. I always joke to my husband about picking up cats that I see on the side of the road and rescuing them, and he always says "Don't even think about it!", but this was different...

I got into the house and my husband could see something was wrong by the look on my face. He said "What's wrong?" and I said "I'm very upset.." and then I started to blubber and cry about the poor old cat that was left behind and he told me "Baby, go back and get the cat."

These people had also left a dog crate at the curb, so I put that back into my van, got a bowl with some cat food, put it inside and went back. Kitty hopped into my car right away, got into the crate to eat, I shut the door, and drove him back home.

A bit apprehensive when he first came in

He's a bit of a surely sounding old man, but very friendly and chill. He had my lab trained to do his bidding in about an hour, all the other cats don't even care that he's here, and he just walks around like he's always lived here. My kids named him Marvin Finelstein. He's pretty awesome. :)

As for the other stuff I got from the pile, there was the crate that I used to bring Marvin home in. I think it was used for showing chickens as the little feeder on the side still has some small gravel like stones in it. There is also a number plate still attached to the side as well which I think must have been for judging..

There were garbage bags full of clothes...

After sorting them, I ended up with a collection of:
5 bras, 15 jeans, 4 shorts, 3 3/4 pants (cullottes?), 3 sport pants, 2 skirts, 9  men's t-shirts, 6 ladies shirts, 5 tank tops, 6 sweaters, 5 zip-up sweaters, 2 polos, 15 pairs of socks, 2 jackets, 1 dress , and 1 lingerie set.

Some of the brand names were: Dynamite, Jessica Sport, Hilfiger Denim Red Label, J2, MXM, Contrast (Reitmans), Pointe Zero, Roadrunner, Fubu, Reebok, Oxygen, Calvin Klein,
AE Sport, and Cherokee

Some of the nicer pieces...

There was also a box with 10 baby sleepers in it...no idea why this picture keeps coming in upseide down...

A bag full of baby toys and 2 matching candle holders

A pair of suede slouchy boots

2 baseball hats and a little marijuana pipe

A bin full of paint rollers, brushes, a case of cassettes, and more 45 lps than I'll ever know what to do with

I just grabbed it for the free bin anyways. I'll keep the painting stuff as I'm planning to paint my walls and those ugly floors, but the rest will be donated.

Other various things included: a one dollar coin "loonie" piggy bank, a lenticular 3D space puzzle, a french brain memory game, a french dictionary, cell phone ear buds, ceramic duck book ends, eye glasses spray on cleaner, a toothbrush still in the package, 2 little mouse figurines, a small stuffed bear, 2 pairs of earrings still on the packaging, hair clips, tweezers, various hardware like clips, screws and a locking mechanism with key, sewing stuff like plastic grids, a crochet hook, elastic, and 3 cross stitch cloths(?) of a house in the summer, in the winter and of a mill,4 fabric placemats and a small fabric drawstring sack.

They were also throwing away a large aquarium with the stand, but I didn't don't have room to take that in.  I saw wet plants and gravel in one of the trash bags, but no dead fish, so after what they did to Marvin, I'm guessing the fish probably got flushed. :( I did manage to save the filter, aerator stone and pump, and the heater. There is also a working alarm clock radio, an actual Tupperware brand container, a shot glass a glass glass, a plastic cup, an angle figurine, a "Caillou" kids bowl, a spoon holder, a carving tool that holds it's own various blades, and the cell phone USB cord that goes with the ear buds.

Holy cow, that's a lot of stuff!

The vintage type

Another garbage night, another bunch of treasures! This hobby is so fun :) One of the first things I picked up this night was a vintage typewritter in it's case. This one is a lot older than the usual ones I pick up, but still electric. It's a Smith Corona Electra 220, and was made in 1969. There is some rust on the case hinges, but the typewritter itself is in excellent condition.

The rest of my route didn't produce anything. I was pretty much giving up and taking the last road home when I came upon a nice big pile. This house wasn't for sale or anything, so I guess they just had a big clean up.

I found one bag full of various little knickknack toys, an old Cassette player/radio, some kind of electric voltage tester, and a bag full of golf balls and tees.

There was a vintage french Monopoly game, that was well kept. All cards, and pieces still accounted for.

This vintage bandage tin was full of gold christmas beaded garland. I'm donating the beads, but keeping the tin for display in my bathroom. The old pictures of the bandaged people kind of make me chuckle :p

There was also a white lamp

A bunch of VHS movies

And conveniently a VCR to go with them. I don't know about you guys, but my kids have gone through VHS movies and DVDs and they did a lot less damage to the VHS movies. Our DVDs are so scratched, and a few have even cracked and broke.

I couldn't believe this Easy Bake oven was complete and still in the box. I plugged it in and even the lightbulb was still working! There were 2 mixes included, but I threw those out not knowing how old they may have been.

Lastly, I grabbed all of this stereo equipement. There is a Sony digital synthesizer, a Magnavox single CD disk player, and an RCA 5 CD disk player.

My husband testing it all out. Yup, it all works just fine.

My husband loves the synthesizer, it's more modern that the one he has, so we'll be keeping that for our stereo. The rest shall all be donated like usual!

Weekend Treasures

The past weekend was pretty nice, so I guess some people took advantage of that and decided to clean up before fall gets here. This of course means that I ended up coming across some nice treasures while we were out and about.

On Saturday, I spotted a child bike seat carrier. It conveniently had all the parts needed to hook it up attached in a little baggie. That is a lot easier than rummaging through boxes and bags for them! I appreciate that this home owner at least made it easier knowing that someone would probably come by to pick through his stuff. I sold the last bike carrier I found at a garage sale for $10. This one is a lot nicer so I think I'll start it at $25 and see how it goes.

On Sunday while on a family day trip, we passed through a small town in eastern Ontario called Finch. One of the houses on the main road had a pile of stuff at the curb, so I made my husband pull over the car so I could rummage around.

Inside a box full of old computer speakers and wire, I pulled out this old Nintendo video game. This will go into my keep pile for when I go visit my video/comic guy again. I don't think it's worth much, but something is better than nothing :)

Sitting up against some old aquariums was also these 2 wall candle holders. I thought they looked neat, so I grabbed them too.

On the way home from our trip, my husband had to stop at the gas station, which meant we took another road home. There is a home on that road that I know is for sale, and at their curb was a bunch of stuff. Our van was totally stuffed with our cooler, the kids, and fishing stuff, so there definitely wasn't any room for picking up more stuff. I told my husband that the minute we got home, I would be getting into my van and driving back to check it out.

Once I got there, I was glad to see that nobody else had gotten there before me because I was sure I spotted a beautiful room divider, and I was right. There was also an old chair, car seat, stainless steel sink, some cruddy looking electric tools, and some various old brown glass jugs. The chair still had a piece of green painters tape stuck to the back rung with $5.00 written on it. I guess this stuff didn't sell at their garage sale.

The room divider was extremely heavy. I don't even know how I managed to get it into my van by myself without giving myself a hernia. My husband helped me get it into the house and he thought it must weigh about 80 pounds. It's pretty old, I'm gonna guess 1940's, but it may even be older. The houses around here are as old as the 1800's, and this house I found it at is one of them. The hinges are also reversible so you can turn the panels to whatever way you prefer. We got out our bathroom scale and put the divider on top...65 pounds.

The chair is also older. On the bottom I saw there are holes around the perimeter, so I think it once had a woven seat. I do like the material on the panel they used to cover it up, I think it keeps it's old antique-y feel. The chair is a bit sticky on the back rungs, so I'll have to give it a good cleaning.

Here is another look at the divider and chair in a different light

My brother's cat, Gillie, who lives with us, has already claimed the chair as his own. He's been on it every day since it came into the house. :)

I'm hoping there will be more people doing big clean ups before the winter comes!
